OK this is from a longer piece I did on another forum. I thought I'd share some of it with you
Interesting topic, I really need to read more of these Thanks to all contributors.
OK that being said here's where I stand. Religion, especially "Organized" religion is more concerned with codifying ritual than in actually exercising its basic tenets. (Aside - why does organized religion make me think of organized crime)
By basic tenets I'm not talking about all the crap that has been piled on over the centuries by people trying to maintain their stranglehold on power in their particular church but rather things like
respect your fellows,
treat others as you'd like to be treated,
help those less off than you,
learn from your mistakes etc.
The systems of behavior/religions I've studied have pretty similar core values along these lines. So that whether you think Jesus, Mohammed, Abraham,Buddha, Joseph Smith, Baba Ganoush, or Skippy the Wonder Slug is gods messenger they are all trying to have people live by the same set of ethical values.
Where things hit the fan is when people seek to interpret this ethical standard into meaning that their way is the best way. Worse yet, that if you don't believe as I do then you are evil.
My god can beat up your god....and twice on Sundays
Questions
How can you believe that a god is omniscient and question his choice of a message delivery, cause isn't that what you're doing when you argue against another religion?
How is it that you get to interpret what god says in the most favorable light to your beliefs but I can't do the same?
and just cause I want to know
Was Modern Catholicism invented by a medieval aerobics instructor? (kneel, pray, stand, pray, sit, pray, stand, pray, kneel)
